Exploring Rainbow Mountain in Peru
A very early pickup will start your adventure to the photogenic rainbow mountain, a natural geological wonder painted with sedimentary layers of red, blue, and gold. After a 3.5-hour bus ride weaving through the Andes Mountains, you will begin a high altitude trek past small villages, herds of alpacas and llamas, and landscapes with views of the sacred Ausangate mountain. The painted mountain is also considered to be holy and believed to be the deity of Cusco by local Peruvians. It is a site of daily worship and offerings by local community members.
The walk to and from the summit is a day-long stagger at over 14,000 feet. The path is carved between the looming snow-capped peaks and startling red rock. If the walk becomes too strenuous, you can always rent a ride on a horse up the mountain. Upon reaching your destination you can take photos and explore the area before descending down the same path for your return journey to Cusco.
Responsible Trekking with Good Life Expeditions
Please note that while we can arrange full day tours to Rainbow Mountain, we do not encourage this excursion. The trip is a long full day at extremely high altitude (5,200m / 17,060ft). If you are not well acclimatized you may suffer from altitude sickness.
Note, breakfast and lunch is included on this tour.
At Good Life Expeditions we offer many exciting treks in the Peruvian Andes. All of our hikes keep your environmental impact to a minimum to make sure you have an unforgettable experience that also respects the natural wonders you visit.
