Journey into the remote Antisana Ecological Reserve for a day of natural beauty, peace, and tranquility with Good Life Expeditions. Founded in 1993, the reserve was created with the purpose of protecting unique local flora and fauna of the region.
Trekking the Antisana Ecological Reserve
Departing from Quito early in the morning, take a scenic three-hour drive to the Antisana Ecological Reserve, home to the fourth highest volcano in Ecuador towering at just under 19,000 feet (5,791 meters). Winding along secluded mountain roads, admire the snowcapped peaks and tall grass plains. During the tour, you’ll explore the reserve and its many jutting cliffs, which create a picturesque landscape. The climate conditions in the region are very extreme with low temperatures, low precipitation, high blowing winds, and low oxygen levels. But the animal and plant life have adapted to such diverse environmental conditions – creating a highly unique ecosystem.
The narrow canyons are also where condors nest and soar freely. Though a distance away, they can still be observed gliding around the highest peaks. Making your way around the reserve’s many lakes and ponds, you can observe the glacial remnants from the past. This is a perfect location for spotting a variety of bird species. The highly endangered Black-faced Ibis, Cinereous Conebills, Andean Teal, and more all call the reserve home.
After a day of exploration, enjoy an included lunch before the picturesque return to your hotel.
